1 of 297 produced for the year 1956
Story
With this extra weight, the car's performance would have been mediocre with the 85hp 6-cylinder engine fitted at the time of its presentation.
Despite strong demand, Mercedes-Benz decided to delay marketing the 220 cabriolet to allow it to have a more powerful engine.
The 220S cabriolet with 100 bhp was launched in the summer of 1956.
This new top-of-the-range model was hand-assembled by workers at the Sindelfingen plant.
This explains why it cost 75% more than a 220S saloon and twice as much as a 219 saloon.
It has a very high standard of finish, bordering on the luxury car segment.
The Mercedes-Benz Ponton cabriolet is based on the platform and front end of the 220 saloon.
It differs from it by having a windscreen that is more curved at the edges, front wings with no body creases, thick chrome trim strips
running along the sides of the car and serving as a limit to the two-tone bodywork and finally long rear wings with
integrated lights at the end, similar to those on the Mercedes-Benz 300d limousine.
Finally, the Ponton cabriolet has a heavy soft top that is easy to manoeuvre and fully retractable.
This allows the car to present a very fluid line when uncovered.
Despite its undeniable qualities, only 3,290 examples of this model were produced during its five-year career.
The car's price was a limiting factor in its popularity.
