It was, perhaps, surprising that Enzo Ferrari, a racing enthusiast and always looking for ways to improve performances, didn't follow the path taken by the Lamborghini Miura in 1967: the new Ferrari, seen as a replacement for the 275 GTB/4, didn't adopt the mid-engine set-up but stuck to the front-engined V12 engine.
Launched at the Paris Motor Show in 1968, it was given the name Daytona to commemorate Ferrari's 1-2-3 finish at the circuit in 1967. Rather high and imposing - it was 20 cm higher than a Miura - the styling of the Daytona was impressive with its long bonnet and compact cockpit positioned at the rear. Designed by Fioravanti for Pininfarina, it had a completely different appearance to the Miura which was low and sleek. At the front, a line of four lights nestled behind a wide " display window " running from one side of the car to the other. This feature was replaced in 1970 with retractable headlights, less fragile, but also less characteristic. Despite what appeared to be a somewhat outdated configuration, there was no concern about its competitiveness.
The fabulous V12 4.4-litre engine, with four overhead cams and dry sump lubrication gave it a character second to none. It was adaptable and powerful, smooth and ferocious. The engine was clearly more powerful than those under the bonnet of the 365 GTC and 365 GT 2+2 and it delivered, with a wonderful sound, 352 bhp at 7,500 rpm. This large coupé was capable of 270 km/h with a stability that its rival, the Miura, didn't enjoy. The Daytona could swallow up sweeping corners with complete confidence, although its steering was a little heavy in tighter turns. The car enjoyed a strong career in competition, notably with the Gr 4 version. In 1971, a Daytona finished fourth in the Tour de France Auto, driven by Vic Elford and Max Kingsland, and the following year took first and second in the hands of Andruet and Biche, driving for Pozzi. At the Le Mans 24 Hour race, the best result achieved by a Daytona was an impressive second in class in 1972, by François Migault and Milt Minter. In this field, Ferrari was ahead of the Lamborghini, notable for its absence on the circuits...
As this incredibly pristine 1972 example demonstrates, the 365 GTB/4 delivered its passengers in luxury and refinement worthy of the Ferrari name. One of 1,383 produced from 1968 through 1972, S/N 15443 is classically turned out in red over a tan leather interior featuring power windows, a wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel, Veglia instrumentation and a gated shifter. The car invites the closest scrutiny, displaying concours-quality fit, finish and detailing. Completed with Ansa exhaust and Michelin XWX radials on chromed Borrani knock-off wire wheels, it shows just 42,175 miles and comes with books, a warranty card and the ever-important tool roll. Classiche Certication inspection completed in 2024.
